  • Emergency Management: FEMA Funds From Tropical Storm Fay Flow Into 2009
    State and federal partners continue to provide recovery assistance to those impacted by Tropical Storm Fay.   More than $50 million in assistance has flowed into the hands of people, businesses and communities in 27 Florida counties since the storm struck last August. Ultimately, 18,815 people registered for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Florida State Emergency Response Team (SERT).   Federal and state funds approved to date include:   $16.7 million from FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program for eligible applicants who suffered losses from the storm. -    More than $14.6 million in Housing Assistance to help pay for emergency rental assistance, temporary lodging and housing repairs. Ten home inspections are pending completion out of some 15,867 requested. -    More than $2 million in Other Needs Assistance to help cover personal property loss, medical costs and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance.   · ...

  • Emergency Management: My Safe Florida Home extends improvements deadline, reinstates grants for hurricane-proofing
    About a third of the 40,000 Florida homeowners who qualified for free government money to make hurricane improvements have yet to claim it. The reason: Many can no longer afford to pay contractors upfront while waiting for state reimbursement for the cost of the home upgrades. Others have lost their My Safe Florida Home grants because they expire one year after an application is approved. The program offers as much as $5,000 for stormproofing projects, such as installing hurricane shutters and impact-resistant windows. Fearing the trend will continue as the economy worsens, state officials this month will begin notifying consumers with unused money that the deadline has been extended to March 31. Expired grants also will be reinstated. My Safe Florida Home was created by the Legislature as a way to encourage Floridians to strengthen their homes against hurricanes and reduce their insurance bills. The application period closed on May 31, and the program will end in June 2009, unless it is reauthorized by the Legislature. ...

    NOTICE OF FUNDING AVAILABILITY SEMINOLE COUNTY GOVERNMENT ONE YEAR ACTION PLAN FOR 2009-2010 On October 1, 2009, Seminole County will receive federal funding from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for activities that benefit low and moderate income persons. The County will receive approximately $2,400,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, approximately $1,200,000 in HOME funds, and approximately $105,000 in Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG) funds.  Projects may be implemented by the County, or the County may contract with local governments, nonprofit agencies, for-profit organizations, or other agencies to undertake activities. The three main categories of activities are: CDBG PROGRAM The Community Development Priorities are:      • Activities geared toward completing the County’s target areas infrastructure.      • Activities providing increased access to public facilities/activities for low income elderly.      • Increased access to public facilities/activities for lower income residents. ...
